It seems like they are on a mission to kill affiliate marketing.

My personal opinion is that's exactly what they want. I suspect they see it as something of no value, like spam.

I think that you give them too much credit. I'm of the belief that this is purely a means by which that they can eliminate competition, no matter the size. With the recent revamp of google shop they want it all for themselves. Same thing has been going on with travel sites as well.

I can also tell you for a fact that their adsense stat reporting has been wrong lately. I'm a bit of a news junkie and don't particularly like the heavy news sites, so a few years ago I built a WP/RSS news site just for me to use. Even though I pretty much didn't care if anyone else showed up I still included adsense in the unlikely event it ever caught on (it didn't), but never the less, I use it every day. As an example, yesterday I perused virtually the entire site and only 1 page view was recorded. This used to not be the case,... if I reviewed 10 pages, there would be 10 page views recorded. Unless they're filtering by IP now,... which wouldn't really be "page views", more like unique visitors. A "page view" is a page view...

It makes kind of sense that they go down that road, since at the end of the day it's the visitor that clicks on the banner, irrespective of how many pages they have viewed. I think they use a combination of IP and cookies, since many have shared IPs. I use analytics to track page views which still work as it should.. at least for now.
