301 redirect for AOM website!?

Post by SWalker1 » Thu May 06, 2010 1:31 pm

Hello,

I wish that AOM has a 301 redirect setup so that all of the AOM pages are not lost in the search engines. I hope that is possible. Thanks again!

We've recently added 404 headers for old item IDs that are no longer valid.

With a 301, wouldn't it assume that a newer page has replaced the older page content? If an item has gone bad or invalid, there wouldn't be anywhere to redirect accept say the homepage.

Does anyone have some insight on this from an SEO perspective?

After researching, Google do not like 404 pages that 301 redirect to the homepage. The best way with AOM is to create a 404 custom pages that contains the new homepage and noindex tag. In the .htaccess file, I will have to add ErrorDocument 404 /custompage

I always have put in my .htaccess
ErrorDocument 404 /redirect.php

whereby I do a 301 redirect to the homepage. Why does Google not like this to catch something that might be a dead link out there?

I think that it have a lot of do with spamming in the past. I remember people used to buy domain name and redirect it to amazon.
