Hi, try to look at your site logfile statistic such as awstats to find some clues..
may be there are specific IPs that are keep accessing your site and caused this prob, if it's a bad robots, try deny access of the ip in .htaccess.

p/s: submit support ticket to AOM...they might able to guide u.

We can solve this problem by having an option to add noindex tag on those subcategory/category pages. I noticed that when a person lands on our aom subcategory/category pages, they are looking for Apple iPod that was cached on your aom "Electronics Page 5" about a month ago. When you look at your website today, there are no Apple iPod on "Electronics Page 5." I personally think that category/subcategory are very poor, landing pages. I have already request this on the Wishlist around Mid-October.

Another thing that I noticed is that the page numbers on the bottom of the category/subcategory does no have a nofollow. Those pages numbers should include nofollow on them as well.

We spoke directly with Amazon on this. If anyone is hitting the API usage limits, please contact Amazon directly for help:
https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/gp ... actus.html

On their form select "Product Advertising API" as the subject. Once you inquire with Amazon let us know what they say.

SWalker, please open a new bug ticket with the nofollow info so we can take another look.

Also, mcarp555 and I are working up a tutorial on how to stop bad bots from wasting your bandwidth and Amazon API calls. It will be featured in his AOM Talk blog (http://www.aomtalk.com).

Thanks,
Justin

Here's what my robots.txt looks like, if it'll help some people:

User-agent: msnbot
Crawl-delay: 30

User-agent: Slurp
Crawl-delay: 30

User-agent: Yandex
Disallow: /

User-agent: twiceler
Disallow: /

User-agent: Speedy
Disallow: /

User-agent: daumoa
Disallow: /

User-agent: Exabot
Disallow: /

User-agent: MJ12bot
Disallow: /

User-agent: Baiduspider
Disallow: /

User-agent: ShopWiki
Disallow: /

For Google, you need to use their Webmaster Tools at:

http://www.google.com/webmasters/

and adjust the Crawl Rate under "Site Configuration" --> Settings, to make sure it doesn't crawl your site too quickly. I get warnings that it's not able to crawl pages that it knows about, but that'll have to do until Amazon relaxes its policies.

I have used this in .htaccess for a couple years and it helped with bandwidth sucking robots.. Not sure how valid some of the entries are now..

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I think using so many rules in htaccess may cause more CPU load.

Can I have one API key for each of my AOM sites ?
and will it help me in solving the "Account limit of 2175 requests per hour exceeded" problem ?

Please suggest.
Thank you

You are limited to two sets of AWS keys at any one time.

Usage restrictions are tied to your Amazon associate account, not how many AWS keys you have.

If your site is getting hammered by bots, trying to spread the load out among different accounts may not make any difference.

I was told once by a webhost that restricting bots by denying them access to your sites does not cause any significant increase in CPU load, since technically they're not able to reach your sites and do anything to generate CPU time. Certainly a long list like the ones shown above will create less work than letting them run riot in your stores.

Hi,
thanks for the reply.

Regarding bad bots.

I have only one site and in last 3 months I had only 10K "bad bots", 6K yahoo+msn and 800K googlebot visits.

So the only way to don't face limits is creating VERY niche sites (and almost forget about long-tail keyword traffic) and limit googlebot?

Hello,

This is becoming a bit of a nightmare and my problems are being compounded by the fact that I do not know at any given moment if my store pages are available or not. I also feel that an error message such as " Account limit of 2914 requests per hour exceeded" does not inspire customer confidence.

I don't make much income from Amazon but the changes that have taken place recently has greatly reduced my income. I can now say that I now generate more income from Google ads.

My European sites (.DE .CO.UK and .FR) are all giving an account limit of 2914 but my US sites appear to be working at present so it would appear that there are separate quotas.

Anyway getting to the point I would appreciate any assistance or advice relating to solutions to this issue.

Also, mcarp555 and I are working up a tutorial on how to stop bad bots from wasting your bandwidth and Amazon API calls. It will be featured in his AOM Talk blog (http://www.aomtalk.com).

Thanks,
Justin

infomatique - have you contacted Amazon yet through their online form?
https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/gp ... actus.html

Let us know what they tell you and if they increase your API limit.

I contacted Amazon through their online form about my IP address being throttled days ago and still have not received a response. I'm of the same opinion as infomatique, where these error messages reflect poorly on our sites and greatly reduces buyer confidence when they are attempting to browse various products before deciding on which ones to purchase.

Regarding the IP throttling, I have so little traffic that it is either bots or others on the same server using up API calls. Just having a website connected to the web will attract bots. It's the cost of doing business on the web. Amazon knows this, but basically wants us all to noindex our stores and spend hours loading down our htaccess files blocking every undesirable bot and country.

My sales are certainly down, but I attribute some of that to removing user reviews.

Thankfully all my eggs are not in one basket so to speak. With Linkshare I can link directly to Wal-Mart products. Granted, the commission and layout is much less desirable then using Amazon and AOM, but what Amazon has done has me thinking that I should direct more of my sales elsewhere. A 4% Wal-Mart sale from a visitor is much better then having them get a xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is throttled message!

It seems Amazon is moving towards outright abandoning their affiliates. The moves they have made certainly indicate they want fewer partners and more of the pie for themselves. It's disturbing, but like anything else we must adapt - even if that means becoming an affiliate with another company.
