Account limit of 2175 requests per hour exceeded.

Post by ravikum » Mon Oct 18, 2010 6:47 pm

Hello,
I found that my AOM store is empty today and displayed only this message :
Account limit of 2175 requests per hour exceeded.

Have you observed this problem on your AOM stores?

My store receives very less traffic and the number of requests per hour seem to have exceeded because of search engine visits.

Please give me tips solve this problem.

Is it possible to increase the cache duration beyond 24 hours so that the number of requests can be minimized ?

Thanks.

Read here. Scroll down to Usage Restrictions.

As mentioned in the text, all it takes is one bad bot to drain your allowance.

Amazon will not allow us to extend the cache lifetime beyond 24 hours.

It would be great if a future version of the AOM script would send us an email notification if this happens, to the same email address where checkout emails go (i.e from the "Reports" tab).

I've banned a lot of bots in robots.txt, and also reduced the crawling of Googlebot via their Webmaster Tools. But, ultimately we're vulnerable to Denial of Service attacks by malevolent crawlers. It would be nice if Amazon was more flexible to those who've been driving them real sales over the years....they don't even appear to publish what our actual API usage is, so we can monitor things.

So far I have been lucky with 30 or so sites, but I did set nofollow on all the recommended check boxes, also limited the number of pages to 20 per category for both amazon and marketplace, set cache to 1000 as well.. I don't display best sellers and other optional boxes at this point to see what happens..

If I'm reading the guidelines correctly, you will be given 2,000 requests per hour and receive an additional 500 requests per hour (up to a maximum of 25,000 requests per hour) for every $1 of shipped item revenue driven per hour in a trailing 30-day period.

So it looks like you have to generate $46.00 in item revenue (not commission) to receive the maximum of 25,000 requests per hour in any thirty day period.

The purpose of the Product Advertising API is to advertise Amazon Products and thereby enable Associates to make money by creating Amazon advertisements and sending traffic back to Amazon. A small number of users are requesting very large amounts of product data while generating a very small amount of product sales. The Product Advertising API efficiency guidelines are designed to promote efficient use of the API. Each account used to access the Product Advertising API will be allowed an initial usage limit of 2,000 requests per hour. Each account will receive an additional 500 requests per hour (up to a maximum of 25,000 requests per hour) for every $1 of shipped item revenue driven per hour in a trailing 30-day period. Usage thresholds are recalculated daily based on revenue performance. To ensure that each account qualifies for the additional threshold increase, the URLs served by the Product Advertising API must be used when linking back to Amazon and the Associate tags used must belong to the account owner.

I think your math is incorrect. $1/hr x 24 hours/day x 30 days/month = $720 in revenues for every 500 extra requests. To get to the maximum (23,000 extra requests), one would need $33,120 in monthly revenues (i.e. 46 x 720).

Also, suppose your limit is 3,000 requests/hour. Is that the actual limit per hour, or is that an average limit? One might get only 200 requests/hour at 4 am, but might get 6,000 requests/hour at 9 pm (depending on when each site gets its traffic spike per day). Would the site breach its limit at 9:30 pm, and be down for 30 minutes, due to the limit? Or does it take into account a rolling average throughout the day?

No, I don't think so. There are just a handfull of stores with that kind of revenue!

Looks like George's math is correct to me. That is how I had figured it. Seems like this will cause problems for people who have multiple stores. If you have five stores, the average requests per hour would only be 400 per AOM store. Hopefully I am wrong about this for the sake of those with multiple stores. Time will Tell.

The root of the problem is Amazon's new "Efficiency Guidelines":
https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/gp ... /main.html
(see the section inside the yellow box which describes the limits)

If you are reaching usage limits, you can contact Amazon directly for help:
https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/gp ... actus.html

GeorgeK, this is a great suggestion...

We'll be looking to add this report feature to the next release.

I have a lot of stores now and some high volume ones (I frequently get 8 to 8.25 %). I have not seen the usage limit. I will let you all know if I start to see this.

Thanks. One will have to be careful that it doesn't send out an email for every pageview when the API limit has been exceeded. For example, suppose your site gets 100 visitors/hour. If it goes over the API limit and it sends out an email at 9:30 pm, you might end up getting 50+ emails, unless the script keeps track of prior emails being sent.

It should also be noted, category/subcategory pages use two api calls while item pages use just one. This has always been the case, but it was handled through Amazon's MultiOperation request which they've deprecated.

This API has now killed off all my sites .. there is no hope now .

The reasons are . all my sites have now dropped out of all of search results because pages keep coming back with the Account limit of 2175 requests per hour exceeded.

therefore this kills your site .. i had over 49 first pages in search results before the API came in ..now iv none ..

this is the END
