Has anyone tried the AOM-Extender?

Post by tbishop » Tue Sep 09, 2008 6:52 pm

I saw it posted on digital point. Looks interesting to me as I am not good at designing website layouts.

Disclaimer: I am not associated with AOM-Extender in any way. I saw it posted on Digital Point this morning and found it to be interesting. I am looking for other opinions on the product.

I'm surprised that the AOM staff has not commented on this yet.

Personally, I would not "trust" any piece of software that manipulates AOM.

Good point NiTe, although the description does make this statement...

"AOM Extender is a script designed to enhance the ability of Associate-O-Matic which helps you easily create professional Amazon stores. It is compatible with all licensing types of AOM (version 4.1.x and up), either Lite version, 30-day Trial, or Full version without touching their source code."

...so it claims not to touch the core, but how would I know...really?

It would be nice if Justin or Mike could investigate this and either give it their blessing or steer us all clear of it.

It looks like a really cool addition to the overall AOM structure, in fact it's very "wordpress-like" and I'm big fan ( http://wordpressmodder.org ).

It looks like a great script... i would like to know if anyone has tried it and if its true that it doesn't alter any of the source code from AoM? If so, does this mean you can still upgrade to the latest versions of AoM without a problem?

I have tried it and didn't like it.
Luckily I got a special rate on it so didn't lose out too bad.
It doesn't touch the core at all.You work through the ext script and it accesses your AOM in an iframe.
I found it buggy and it kept reverting back to original settings.
Luckily AOM is easy to restore!!!!!!!!!!!!

After tinkering with the demo... I decided not to try it. I suppose I am glad I held off.

It seems to me that you could so 90% of the functionality by simply reading the AOM docs and implementing it withing the current control panel which gets better and better with each release. Plus, let's say you bought this thing, not supported by the friendly AOM folks, and Justin does a major overhaul of a section. You might find yourself stuck in the last version of AOM until the autor(s) of this product get around to updating their software.

So let's take their 'features' one by one:
1. 404 Page Not Found Trapper - Trap all 404 page not found error with the options to redirect, show AOM search result, Google search result or display your own HTML.
--AOM already has 404 functionality, and in the case of an Apache web server (and presumably IIS) you can set the 404 page to anything you want.

2. AdSense Plugin - Place your AdSense ads anywhere you like
--AOM already has a wide selection of placement options in the custom box functionality.

3. RSS Feed Plugin - Put additional contents and keywords on your page for better SEO effect. This RSS Feed differs from the original AOM RSS Feed function. It allows you to create your own style of feed display HTML using customizable template functionality.
--AOM has RSS feed functionality built in, if you want more or better control, consider CARP and call it as a php from the custom boxes.

4. GeoIpFilter Plugin - Normally, Amazon will pay you commission only when the visitor comes from the same geographic zone. This Plugin will help you filter your visitors based on their IP address, and you redirect them to the other web site.
--Again, this is built into Apache and quite frankly most search engines will penalize you if they send a person who clicked to your site and you redirect them somewhere else.

5. SearchBox Plugin - Add Google search box to your store and enjoy the capability of Google custom search while getting additional way to monetize your store.
--I already do this using a custom box and custom page combination, I think I posted a howto on this in the forum a couple of years ago, but if you want this and can't find it let me know.

6. ShareThis Plugin - Share product with others by adding link to add your web page to social bookmark web site.
--This is extemely easy to implement either with raw html or as a called php file from a custom box.

StatTracking - Embedded 3rd-party statistics tracking code to your AOM store.
--Can do this with Google analytics, or AWSTATS both free

Widget Plugin - Easily put Amazon Widget code, ShoppingAPI Widget code, or PHP code in any available locations on selected pages. This Plugin will help you build an extraordinary Amazon store with your own imagination.
--Can do this already with custom boxes

So it looks like all they are doing for a price close to the AOM purchase price is...well...not much. Just read the docs, setup a practice site and play with it or post questions here in the forum.

With knowledge of CSS and PHP, you can have a good-looking site by using default AOM templates. I'm not proficient at the design either.
